This was the fateful day when my life changed for the worse. Reason, you ask? My best friend shifted to Bangalore for work purposes. To have that sole friend one can share everything with without any hesitation move away is probably the worst thing that can happen to anyone. She broke this terrible, terrible news to me just a week before leaving which barely gave me any time to mentally prepare myself. For the next two weeks after she left, I survived on my favourite foods including tenderloin steak and big tubs of exotic ice creams.
28th May: One of the saddest days of my life! But guess what? Because I had so patiently and dedicatedly worked at my place of work, my team leader easily approved my 5 day-long leave to go visit my alter ego in Bangalore. By the end of June, she too had settled down a bit and was getting used to a new place, a new office, a new home, new people, and of course new friends. So, I happily booked my tickets and flew there on the 3rd of July. I liked her new place and her company of new friends. I absolutely loved the weather but didn’t enjoy the food much. But that’s what food chains of popular restaurants are there for. Every day I dragged my best friend to my favourite restaurant in Bangalore to enjoy the yummy pancakes, steaks, burgers, pizzas, and pastas. But because everything good comes to an end, I had to pack my bags and return home. Seeing her after a month made me realise how much I missed her. Another week of munching on junk food, tenderloin steak, and tubs of ice cream was what followed. Food indeed offers the best comfort in the time of misery. But then, that reflected in my appearance as I easily gained over 5 kilos in a period of just 2 months. But having become accustomed to her absence, I am now fit again. But if anything like this happens to me again in the future, I am determined to devour books rather than devouring food. Wish me luck!

Does the title seem inappropriate? I thought so because as dancers, we have to keep a check on our eating habits as the kind of food we consume directly affects our performance levels. Before I started dancing, I really lived to eat. I didn’t want to earn money so I could travel around in fancy cars or live in a grand, palatial mansion. I wanted to earn so that I could travel the world and try each and every cuisine that exists. Considering my inhuman appetite, I wasn’t slim of course. But believe it or not, I didn’t weigh as much as I should have. The words dieting, weight-loss, exercise, will power etc. didn’t exist in my lexicon. And then one day dance happened! My mother who just could not see me this way anymore forced me to join a dance class. I thought, why not? How hard could it be? Well, I was wrong. My dear mom made me join a jazz class. And so wearing baggy clothes, off I went for my first dance class ever. And oh my god! I realised for the first time the severity of my obesity. My body refused to coordinate and I was sweating unbelievably by the end of the first half of the class. But despite all this, I really enjoyed the class and especially liked the dancing part. With passage of time I realised how much I loved dancing. That was the day I decided to lose weight as I really wanted to become a professional jazz dancer. The weight issues were interfering with my dancing and I could not take it anymore. After three years of rigorous efforts, here I am in Mumbai as a part of a famous dance institution of India. I am at the moment sitting in a famous restaurant in Mumbai, waiting for my friends to get done with their dinner. I love to dance as much as I love food. But I know if I do not exercise self-control, I will not be able to perform as beautifully as I can now. I eat everything I like but I know when to stop. And then when I do sometimes eat more than I should have, I make sure I burn up those extra calories with some extra minutes of cardio the next day. Okay, I have to go now as my friends and I are going for a couple of drinks in one of the best bars in Mumbai. But before I go, let me tell you one thing. If you too want to become a dancer and are struggling with similar issues I faced, just believe in your limitless potential. Let your weight not come in between your dreams. So go hit the gym while I go party. Au Revoir!
Let me just begin by stating the obvious, as you surely would have derived from the title: I love eggs! Good, now that we’ve established that, allow me to go into a little dissertation of how I came to love eggs, how my love for eggs has evolved, and where I stand on the matter today. The seed of egg-loving was incepted by my dear old folks when I was just a wee thing. “Look, a crow!” and while my chubby gaping mouth followed the flight of the bird, in went a little piece of some boiled egg. It was no eggs benedict but it was enough to get me to gobble up the rest of it, all at age 2. Then came the glorious years of ‘sunny-side-up’. While all the other parents would have such a hard time feeding their little ones eggs, there I was, sat happily at a table, impatiently awaiting my sunny-side-up with crisp toast and just the right amount of salt and pepper. And mind you –I was quite the perfectionist, one leaky yolk, and I’d send it right back to the kitchens! After the era of sunny-side-up came my fascination for movies. And no, this didn’t mean I had given up my love for eggs for movies! Instead, I was inspired to widen my horizon and get mommy dearest to try out a bunch of new recipes. Maggie Carpenter saying ‘I love Eggs Benedict, I hate every other kind’ in Runaway Bride etched onto my memory forever more. Unfortunately, mother isn’t quite able to perfect the art, so I have to resort to this awesome restaurant in Mumbai, SHD, for my dose of Eggs Benedict every now and then!
And well, between my parents egg-feeding habits and amazing breakfast joints that serve up some truly delectable egg treats… I find the time has come to explore some egg recipes by myself! And thus continues my tryst with eggs –hope you found it ‘eggciting’! Yes, you might have noticed that I’ve readily dropped lunch from the title –but it’s all within reason… Lunch is boring. So, moving on to the more exciting meals of the day –breakfast and dinner! Personally, I’m a big fan of both, or all food to be precise, a glutton such as I knows no distinction between a flavoursome Eggs Benedict with bacon on the side along, or a juicy tenderloin steak –the hours of day all fade away when a delectable dish is placed in front of me, as a ravenously devour breakfast, lunch, tea, or dinner… Or a midnight snack or two, of course! But, not all of us are as food-crazed as I –so given the choice between breakfast and dinner, which would you pick? Let’s introduce the contenders now, as you’ve already figured out. On one side you have breakfast –a succulent plateful of Eggs Benedict with juicy strips of bacon on the side. On the other side we have a portion of luscious tenderloin steak with fries on the side.
Which would you pick? Does the idea of biting into a gorgeously poached egg with the yellow oozing into your mouth with the strong taste of hollandaise caressing your palate just like at your favourite Restaurant for breakfast sound more appealing to you than steak? Or does cutting and biting into the juicy pink insides of a tender steak seem much more inviting to you? Are you more of an eggs and toast person or a pasta or Thai curry person? Do you enjoy eating more first thing in the morning, or last thing before you hit the sack? Well, there’s always the third option… you could very possibly be drooling to both right now, which makes you just like me –a total foodie! |
