Now I might like to confess that I have nothing, genuinely nothing against eating. Or against food, for that matter. It’s just this wanton feeling of being ‘filled to the brim’ that I refrain from breakfasting the extravagant way. I can’t help it if I don’t feel like having anything even remotely edible, forget gorging on the butter-smeared pancakes and breads. No matter how decadent they may taste, breakfast has never been, and can never be ‘A-my-thing’, if that’s how people put it.
There is just one craving I wake up to every morning—a huge mug of piping hot coffee, with a waft of bitterness in it. Coffee and a handful of almonds best describe breakfast for me. Much to my mom’s concerns and her repeated taunts, coffee, apparently is a big turn-off for health considering the myriad ways in which it hinders absorption of iron into the blood (iron reference: I am unbelievably anaemic. Before I could actually understand the sanctity of terms like ‘iron’ and ‘haemoglobin’ ). I would be lying if I say that I don’t agree with her, but then, mornings aren’t mornings without coffee. And by coffee, I strictly mean caffeine. I have lost count of times when my mother has ceaselessly pestered ( Tempted. Lured. Bribed.) me into some of the best breakfast places in Mumbai just so I could adopt a healthier way of ‘breaking the fast’. It’s such a futile attempt, I wonder sometimes. I mean, which lazy brat would ever wake up in the morning and deck up to visit some breakfast restaurant, no matter if it’s the best restaurant in Mumbai. I ain’t giving up on my sleep to indulge in an act of gluttony and that too into the wee hours of morning. Who would?
